Google: Giant Leap for Small Sites

Until recently, the small-business owner who wanted to advertise on the Web had to buy space on individual sites — perhaps a banner ad on ESPN.com or a pop-up on Salon.com. There was no way for the small fry to compete with the big spenders like General Motors or Coca-Cola. Google will sell these ads, which will appear alongside its search results and on partner sites that display Google’s search box. The ads will be sold on a pay-for-performance basis: Advertisers will be charged only when users click through to their sites. For Google, which makes all its money from selling advertising, the new service could be a gold mine. By opening its network to smaller advertisers, Google could significantly boost its revenue. .
