California’s drought just hit a new ‘shocking’ level — and experts fear it could get worse

California’s ongoing drought just hit a new record low, and experts are warning that the state could be in for even drier and hotter conditions in the future.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported that 100% of California is now experiencing some level of drought, with more than 97% of the state in the two most severe categories of drought: extreme and exceptional. This is the first time that the entire state has been in drought since the monitor began tracking drought conditions in 2000.

The drought has already had a significant impact on the state, causing widespread wildfires, crop failures, and water shortages. And experts say that the worst may be yet to come.
